It was so much fun writing in another culture and between us Day and I found or knew so many interesting tidbits to bring into it to bring that culture alive. We're looking forward to more such adventures!
Danielle Ackley-McPhailhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00272043800387940380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1176298515094230212.post-44484473090890937482014-07-17T23:12:52.292-04:002014-07-17T23:12:52.292-04:00Hey, thanks for reading! :) As I said, it is a t...Hey, thanks for reading! :) As I said, it is a topic that is near and dear to my heart. I'm fascinated at how easy it is for us to fall into writing these defaults and how we're indoctrinated to thinking that these defaults are "neutral."

Race is only one of those areas. Disability, gender, even body size/image. Television and magazines telling us a certain size woman or "look" is the default. It is only in the last few years we see people fighting back, particularly when they see what it is doing to young girls.

Writing a book set in another part of the world with characters of a different ethnicity in "Baba Ali and the Clockwork Djinn" was a conscious effort to try and escape that kind of limited thinking. In some ways, I think we didn't quite push far enough and in others, I think we were more successful than we ever anticipated.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10946961755715637682noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1176298515094230212.post-2029829223500296232014-07-17T21:28:09.237-04:002014-07-17T21:28:09.237-04:00Our world IS made up of wonderful and complex char...Our world IS made up of wonderful and complex characters.
